Preparing the home for recovery after spine surgery
After you have successfully prepared for spine surgery and the surgery itself has gone successfully, you will return home after a few days.
In this article, you will learn how to prepare the house for postoperative recovery. You will see how important the spine really is and how the activities you took for granted now represent a real challenge.
Spinal surgery is a serious matter, and avoiding exertion and overloading after surgery is very important for a successful recovery. Your movement and movement after surgery will be limited and sometimes painful.
You will not be able to bend down completely, reach something from a great height or from the floor and low shelves. Place the items you use every day in easy-to-reach places next to the bed on the bedside table or chair (e.g. mobile phone, remote control, books, water, tablets, etc.).
After surgery, you will begin to notice that it takes more physical effort than before surgery to do otherwise simple tasks such as preparing food, chopping vegetables, or washing dishes.
You will need the help of loved ones on whom you can rely
I recommend that you ask someone to help you with cooking or prepare ready-made meals in advance that you will eventually only reheat as needed.
Try to move things that you will use daily to an easily accessible height at waist level. The less you raise your hands, the easier your life will be, trust me - I've been through it.
Make sure your floors and walkways are clear so they don't have to step over things that could cause you to trip and fall.
A fall can do a lot of damage to your newly operated spine, and there is a high chance that you will need surgery again after the fall.
Laundry that piles up is another big pain after back surgery. You won't be able to lift heavy baskets, bend down or hang laundry as you used to. The best practice is to prepare a certain amount of clean laundry in advance, and then ask someone to help you with the laundry while you recover. I recommend that you prepare clean clothes for at least a few days after the operation to make it easier.
Find someone to go to the grocery store for you and help you with other chores around the house for the first few weeks after surgery.
For a more painless sitting on the toilet seat, I recommend buying a riser that is easy to install. Sitting on the toilet is a challenge after spine surgery.
Now that we have touched on useful products, in the menu of the MySpine application, which I created in collaboration with a team of doctors, you have the item "Useful products" where you will find this and other products that will make your daily activities easier.
As a rule, people around you will not understand how you feel and what level of pain you are experiencing. I've been through it and I understand you completely.
If possible, educate your household members about your current medical condition so they can better understand you.
One more detail. If it is possible - raise your bed so that it is easier for you to sit or lie down.
We wish you a fast and successful recovery!
